our mission
a bit about
Greater Norristown Art League, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion, education, and appreciation of the visual arts. Established in 1941 and officially chartered in 1957, GNAL is housed in the historic Old Norriton Schoolhouse—recognized as one of East Norriton Township’s treasured landmarks.
The League offers a diverse range of day, evening, and weekend classes for both adults and children, along with one-day workshops across all media, exhibition opportunities for artists, and a vibrant summer art camp for youth.
At the heart of GNAL’s mission is a commitment to fostering creativity, cultivating artistic skills, and expanding community engagement with the arts throughout the Greater Norristown area and beyond.
growing through art
rooted in history
In 1941 a group of about 125 people, who hoped to further education and appreciation of the arts, sponsored a one-man show for Marvin Detwiler at the YMCA. It was received so well that the Norristown Art Committee (later to become the Norristown Art League) was formed. The group met in many different locations including the Norristown YMCA, Army Reserve Center, A.D. Eisenhower School, the Bridgeport Fire Station, and occasionally members’ homes. The group became a chartered non-profit organization by 1957 and officially became a 501(c)3 sometime in the late 1990s.
art happens here, in a schoolhouse
built to inspire
The place where people come to learn and inspire one another. The Greater Norristown Art League’s (GNAL) home is a small, one-room schoolhouse that was built in 1894.
The current building is a replacement for the original school which was built in 1771 by Norristown’s first physician, Dr. Shannon. It is the oldest school in E. Norriton Township. Dr. Shannon’s family hosted George Washington on his march from Valley Forge to New Jersey in 1778.
After the township was divided into East and West Norriton in the early 1900s, the building was no longer needed as a schoolhouse and subsequently sold for $875. It was sold again and used as a Community Center.

-
In the early days, juried art show winners didn’t take home cash — instead, they received elegant silver trays, goblets, and pitchers as tokens of artistic excellence.
-
Exhibitions were once held at the YMCA and later at Norristown High School.
-
Membership in 1951: just 93 dedicated artists and art lovers.
-
Dues in 1948: a modest $1.00 per year!
-
Education first: the League offered free biweekly painting classes in its earliest years.
-
Children’s classes made their debut in 1949, nurturing young creativity.
-
The community once celebrated art in grand style at the annual Beaux Arts Ball, a highlight of the social calendar for many years.
-
Fast forward to 2025: the GNAL team proudly opened a second classroom in the basement and installed its first professional kiln — a milestone for ceramic arts for the next generation of GNAL makers.

meet frida, our studio muse
Frida Zuzu Catlo joined us in 2024 as our resident muse—and quickly took on many important roles: studio mouser, seat warmer, food inspector, professional singer, fuzzy therapist, and so much more. She has become an irreplaceable and inspiring member of our team, bringing comfort, creativity, and a little mischief to our space every day.
With Frida’s help—and in celebration of her birthday—we’ve been proud to support Kitty Cottage, raising awareness and collecting donations of food, litter, and essential supplies for cats in need.
Join us in supporting our partners at Kitty Cottage Adoption Center. Your kindness and generosity helps provide care and comfort and makes a big difference for cats in need—Frida thanks you! 🐾
