Fundamentals of Drawing

with Jason Rodriguez

Tuesday: 6:30 to 8:30 pm

Winter Session 1:  2/13, 2/20, 2/27,  3/5

Tired of your drawings looking flat? Do your still lives just look off? Or maybe your characters  end up with a long torso and tiny legs. Is that white, blank page saying you are already doing it wrong before you even begin? It might be time to uncover the secret to drawing things you love. Every object, character and scene are made up of shapes in space. This class will teach you how to see shape in everything, so you can draw anything you’d like. Once we learn to see shapes in space, we will learn some tricks to drawing the human head and figure. This class is perfect for beginners and those who need a refresher in drawing. When you’re happier with your drawings, you’re going to draw more, and that’s good for everyone!

This is an on-site class ideal for beginners as well as more experienced artists interested in pastel painting using soft pastels, or drawing with pastel pencils or charcoal. Work from your own source material such as a printed photo (that you took) or from an iPad. (Working from phone images is not encouraged.)

Ready to explore the world of pastel? This class is ideal for artists interested in pastel painting using soft pastels, or drawing with pastel pencils or charcoal. Work from your own source material such as a printed photo (that you took) or from an iPad. (Working from phone images is not encouraged.)

The class will focus on composition and expression using your desired medium of pastels, pastel pencils, or charcoal. I would like us to explore how each of the parts/objects in your executed work contributes to creating an expressive final piece. What does the observer "see"? What are you trying to "say"?

This class is ideal for intermediate to advanced pastel artists.

Materials:

Pastels, such as NuPAstel (hard), Rembrandt (medium, Schminke, Unison, and Sennelier (soft) are some examples. Ebay is a good source of quality sets of the above pastels as well as Daler-Rowney and Grumbacher (discontinued but a good medium to soft stick.) Online sites include Dakota, Jackson's, Jerry's Artarama, and Blick Art Material. Be sure to buy "artist quality" rather than "student quality". Your finished work will thank you.

Paper, such as sanded UArt 320 and Pastel Premier are the most forgiving. These are the papers I use most. As you become more comfortable with the medium, there are lots of other papers.

Charcoal sticks and pencils if drawing

Pastel pencils, such as Faber-Castell, Stabilo, Derwent and others

Charcoal paper from Strathmere or Canson M-Teintes for drawing using pastel pencils, and charcoal.
