Introduction to Pastel
Landscapes & Still Life

ONSITE - 6 week
Landscapes & Still Life
with Catherine McIlhenny

Thursday at 10:00 to 12:30 pm

Winter Session 2: 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11, 4/18

Spring Session 3: 5/2, 5/9, 5/16, 5/23, 5/30, 6/6

Location: GNAL Building, 800 West Germantown Pike, East Norriton, PA 19403

This is an on-site class ideal for intermediate to advanced or more experienced artists interested in pastel painting using soft pastels or drawing with pastel pencils or charcoal. Work from your own source material such as a printed photo (that you took) or from an iPad. (Working from phone images is not encouraged.)

Ready to explore the world of pastel? This class is ideal for artists interested in pastel painting using soft pastels or drawing with pastel pencils or charcoal. Work from your own source material such as a printed photo (that you took) or from an iPad. (Working from phone images is not encouraged.)

The class will focus on composition and expression using your desired medium of pastels, pastel pencils, or charcoal. I would like us to explore how each of the parts/objects in your executed work contributes to creating an expressive final piece. What does the observer "see"? What are you trying to "say"?

This class is ideal for intermediate to advanced pastel artists.

Materials:
Pastels, such as NuPAstel (hard), Rembrandt (medium, Schminke, Unison, and Sennelier (soft) are some examples. Ebay is a good source of quality sets of the above pastels as well as Daler-Rowney and Grumbacher (discontinued but a good medium to soft stick.) Online sites include Dakota, Jackson's, Jerry's Artarama, and Blick Art Material. Be sure to buy "artist quality" rather than "student quality". Your finished work will thank you.

Paper, such as sanded UArt 320 and Pastel Premier are the most forgiving. These are the papers I use most. As you become more comfortable with the medium, there are lots of other papers.

Charcoal sticks and pencils if drawing

Pastel pencils, such as Faber-Castell, Stabilo, Derwent and others

Charcoal paper from Strathmere or Canson M-Teintes for drawing using pastel pencils, and charcoal.

ONSITE - 6 week

Photography Basics and Beyond

instructed by Paul Manoogian

Wednesday: 6:00 to 9:00 pm

Spring Session 3: 4/17, 4/24, 5/1, 5/8, 5/15, 5/22

Location: GNAL Building, 800 West Germantown Pike, East Norriton, PA 19403

In this six-week course, you will become more familiar with your camera, lighting, and improving your

proficiency as photographer.

We will cover the details of light, how lenses interact with your subjects, and how that translates into what your final image will be. We will also cover the different settings on your camera and help you get out of the habit of always using an automatic mode setting, and what all those manual settings mean. Our discussion will cover how and when to use these different modes effectively. Further, we will discuss different types of lighting and how to use flash, constant light, natural light, and modifiers. There will also be information on how to use inexpensive (and sometimes free) solutions for creating compelling imagery from simple household items. We will talk deeply about composition and the most important parts of framing your photography to create images that draw others into the frame and make them feel engaged in your photos.

Discussion on post-processing your images will be explained so that you'll be able to take your photography to new levels. As part of that topic, we'll learn about the difference between shooting in

JPEG mode versus RAW modes along with the benefits and caveats of both.

As a group, we will spend an ample amount of time during each class practicing as a group and working hands-on with what we've learned.

For this course, please bring your DSLR camera. Though camera models and brands create different terminology for some of their settings and features, everything we will cover in this course can be applied to the standards of photography for your DSLR. We will also discuss some options regarding mobile phones and how to shoot more professional-looking images with those devices.
