This class is about the knowledge acquired and the fun involved with creating an oil painting. You will learn how to develop a painting from start to finish, with a focus on preparing the surface, creating an interesting composition, and getting the image onto the canvas. We will also discuss and practice the application of paint, along with the proper use and care of materials. We will go over practical matters such as the economics of purchasing materials, as well as how to get into art shows and proper framing. Class critiques will be encouraged.

This is an on-site class ideal for beginners as well as more experienced artists interested in pastel painting using soft pastels, or drawing with pastel pencils or charcoal. Work from your own source material such as a printed photo (that you took) or from an iPad. (Working from phone images is not encouraged.)
The class will focus on composition and expression using your desired medium of pastels, pastel pencils, or charcoal. I would like us to explore how each of the parts/objects in your executed work contributes to creating an expressive final piece. What does the observer "see"? What are you trying to "say"?
Materials:
Pastels, such as NuPAstel (hard), Rembrandt (medium, Schminke, Unison, and Sennelier (soft) are some examples. Ebay is a good source of quality sets of the above pastels as well as Daler-Rowney and Grumbacher (discontinued but a good medium to soft stick.) Online sites include Dakota, Jackson's, Jerry's Artarama, and Blick Art Material. Be sure to buy "artist quality" rather than "student quality". Your finished work will thank you.
Paper, such as sanded UArt 320 and Pastel Premier are the most forgiving. These are the papers I use most. As you become more comfortable with the medium, there are lots of other papers.
Charcoal sticks and pencils if drawing
Pastel pencils, such as Faber-Castell, Stabilo, Derwent and others
Charcoal paper from Strathmere or Canson M-Teintes for drawing using pastel pencils, and charcoal.

This class builds upon two earlier drawing classes, and is open to all artists. You do not need to have attended the two earlier classes to join this ongoing group. The focus is upon composition and using colors that match the values of the scene. Artists of all experience levels are welcome, using any painting medium.
Doug will be doing demos in pastel and oils during the class that focus upon drawing evocative compositions, the effective use of underpaintings, and how to match your color selections to the desired value ranges for the scene. Doug will be helping each artist individually during these classes.
Please bring your painting media supplies along with electronic or printed photos of your favorite subjects for your use. Any media is fine, including chalk pastels, acrylics, oil, watercolor or color pencils. The first class will begin with color theory, later classes will demonstrate the use of underpainting to establish values, color selections that match the desired values, and then proceed to the finishing touches to complete a painting. Please join us for this informative class!
