Discover the bold, graphic world of linocut! This one-day workshop is perfect for beginners or anyone curious about the satisfying, centuries-old art of relief printmaking. Linocut is a fun and accessible technique that transforms a simple drawing into a striking, repeatable image using specialized carving tools. Bring one 4×6 black and white graphic you want to make into a stamp, and you will make that stamp during the class!
What You Will Learn:
In this intensive, hands-on workshop, you will be guided step-by-step through the entire linocut process, covering all the fundamentals you need to continue printing at home.
Design & Transfer: Learn how to translate an initial sketch or photograph into a high-contrast design suitable for carving.
Safe Carving Techniques: Master the use of various linocut tools (gouges) to safely and effectively carve your image into the linoleum block, focusing on line quality, texture, and handling negative space.
Inking the Block: Learn the proper method for rolling out relief printing ink and evenly applying it to your carved block using a brayer.
Hand-Printing: Create multiple prints of your unique design using traditional hand-burnishing techniques (no press required!) onto quality printmaking paper.
Registration Basics: Get an introduction to simple registration methods for achieving clean print placement.
Important Notes:
Level: Beginner (No prior experience is necessary).
Materials: All tools, linoleum blocks, quality paper, and inks are provided, please just bring one 4×6 black and white graphic you want to make into a stamp.
Safety: We will review important safety procedures for handling carving tools.
Attire: Please wear comfortable, old clothing or bring an apron, as printing ink can stain.
